Strudel Flow 2 is here – A new way to create music visually with Strudel.

For the past few months, we’ve been working on an updated version of Strudel Flow that we’re excited to share with you. V2 brings an updated interface, a new radial menu, community patches, an API for adding your own instruments and effects, and more.

For those who missed the first version, Strudel Flow is a visual interface built on top of Strudel : a music live coding language in the browser. Each node creates or transforms Strudel code to build musical patterns. You can play around in Strudel Flow or copy the generated code and keep experimenting elsewhere in your browser.
A little about live coding
As developers of open source software, we find the ethos of the live coding movement aligns well with our values. In the Algorave draft manifesto , the makers of Strudel emphasize sharing an “insight into algorithms.” We believe in sharing our process, coding in public, and letting people see and hear changes as they happen, mistakes included.
As AI has taken over the software engineering scene, we think it’s worth remembering that coding is a fun thing to do for its own sake. Your browser can be a place to play, explore, and make something just because it’s fun.
Strudel Flow is also a chance to put React Flow to work ourselves. We spend our days developing the library, and building our own applications gives us a different perspective on what works well and what we can make better.
What’s new in version 2.0
- Goodbye sidebar, hello radial menu. Now you can add nodes just by right-clicking empty canvas space or just by dropping a connection into an empty space. This makes it super intuitive to add new nodes and build patterns.

- A new node API makes it easier for contributors to add instruments, sounds, and effects.
- We’ve updated the themes, with some nice new colors from tweakcn .
- New filter knobs let you shape your sound.
- A new scope visualizer shows the waveform as your patch plays.

- We’ve consolidated instruments and effects to make the nodes simpler and more consistent.
- A searchable community patch gallery lets you explore what other people have made and share your own work.
Make something with us
We would love to hear what you make with Strudel Flow and have built a few new ways for you to share your work with us. In the new Patches panel, you can save your patterns as JSON files. These can be re-uploaded into the browser or shared in our new community panel. All you have to do is open a Pull Request in the Strudel Flow GitHub repository. Once merged, it will appear in our community gallery.
You can also contribute by adding new instruments and effects. Strudel has so much to explore, and we’ve only scratched the surface. Our new API lets you define your controls and Strudel code in a small .node.ts file, and the app handles discovery, the menu entry, and saved settings.
Play around, try something strange, and share with us what you’ve made.
